The first fatal victim in the 2014 protests in Venezuela
that began on February 12 — dubbed 12-F
by opposition and human rights groups — was a government supporter. Juan
Montoya leads the official list of 40 people killed during the months-long
demonstrations against the administration of President Nicolás Maduro. On
February 12, Montoya’s body lay on the corner of Tracabordo and Monroy streets,
in front of the Caracas Candelaria neighborhood, with a gunshot to the face
that took his life instantly. He had gone not to protest, but to confront the
mostly college-aged young people who had gathered in front of the
