Venezuela combines all the ingredients of
geopolitical catastrophe — oil dependency, reckless economic policies,
left-wing authoritarianism, divisive populism, and megalomaniacal leadership —
conducive to the ruin of a country and its people. Arguably, this lethal
compound has created the worst humanitarian and political catastrophe in the
Western Hemisphere since World War II. Its people deserve better. They need a
considered and concerted international effort to restore democracy and
