Venezuela heads to the polls to elect a
new parliament on 6 December. The elections take place in a climate of violence
and at a time of economic crisis and political upheaval, with the government
accused of orchestrating chaos and jailing political opponents. Since 1999, the
Venezuelan parliament has been dominated by alliances and parties close to its
former president, the late Hugo Chávez. But polls show that the ruling
Socialists could lose the legislature in Sunday’s vote for first time in 16
