his nation “wanted to tell the world… what had happened, because it was totally
unacceptable”. The spat erupted when Maduro shut a major border crossing last
week to combat what he says are rampant smuggling and paramilitary activities
near Colombia, and declared a state of emergency in six western cities. An
estimated 5 million Colombians live in Venezuela, many of them dual nationals. “In
order to clean out the paramilitarism, crime, bachaquerismo [petty contraband
of subsidized, regulated, or other goods], kidnapping, and drug trafficking, I
have decided to close the border in zone 2 of Tachira state, in the
municipalities of Lobatera, Ayacucho, Garcia de Hevia, and Panamericano”, he
