New Conductor of Alabama Symphony Asserts He Was Tortured in Venezuela


Carlos Izcaray, a Venezuelan conductor with an active career based in Europe, will be the next music director of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. He takes over in September, replacing Justin Brown, who stepped down from the Birmingham-based ensemble in 2012. The 37-year-old Izcaray has built a wide-ranging conducting career but it comes after some difficult experiences growing up in Caracas, Venezuela. Last year, he told WQXR's Conducting Business about a time in 2004 in which he was arrested and tortured while watching an anti-Hugo Chávez protest near his home. More…
