The school year in Venezuela is off to a
slow start. Classrooms were mostly empty Monday morning as few children arrived
for their first day amid the country’s crippling economic crisis. With
hyper-inflation gripping Venezuela, most parents cannot afford school supplies
or even the food necessary for children to be able focus on class work. Growing
issues with public transportation are also making it difficult for children to
reach schools. Despite having one of the worst years on record for absences,
