A seminar at the St Augustine campus of
The University of the West Indies in the past week provided evidence of a real
political, humanitarian and security nightmare taking place in neighbouring
Venezuela, the realities of which are not being properly understood right here,
mere miles away. It is inconceivable that the Government of Trinidad and
Tobago, and indeed of the member countries of the regional integration
movement, are unaware of the many ways in which brutality of one sort or the
other is taking place. The Caribbean Centre for Human Rights brought persons in
the know, on the ground in Venezuela, to what was called a fact-finding
dialogue. It was the second such event, the first having been held in Miami in
