Former White Sox Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio declined an
invitation to participate in Tuesday’s All-Star tribute to Latino greats
because of the political unrest in his native Venezuela. Aparicio, 83, sent out
a tweet in Spanish that translates to: “Thanks MLB for the honor at the
All-Star Game but I can’t celebrate when young people of my country are dying
for their freedom.” An economic and political crisis in Venezuela has led to
mass protests in the streets and resulted in over 75 deaths, according to
reports. Aparicio, 13-time All-Star and one of the best shortstops of his era,
played 18 years in the majors, including 10 with the White Sox, and his voice
