Venezuela, a wannabe dictator and a dilemma for Trump


That's certainly true, but the Trump administration will have to craft a strategy for Venezuela that reaches beyond boilerplate denunciations. The most immediate goal should be to persuade the Maduro government to allow humanitarian aid into the country so that Venezuelans get access to food and medicine. Beyond that, the U.S. and countries across Latin America will have to find the leverage to persuade Maduro to release scores of political dissidents jailed without trial, and to move forward with local elections that have been suspended for months. And if there's a consensus in the country to hold the presidential election earlier than when it is slated for now, in 2018, then the U.S. and the rest of Latin America should push Maduro's regime hard on that as well.
