US-Venezuela relations: what’s next?

Why is it in the US’ interest to promote the dialogue? First, it will help foster democracy in Venezuela. It is one the US’ fundamental interests to promote democracy in the Americas. By fostering talks in cooperation with other countries in the region, this dialogue could generate stability and progress in Venezuela that will promote more stability in the entire region. Second, promotion of the dialogue will create pressure for the government and the opposition in Venezuela to generate an accord and come up with policies to improve the current situation.
