Christmas. For three decades, Cuba banned Christmas, even as the Soviet Union
vainly fought to abolish the Christian holiday from its Marxist calendar. But
Cuba relented and the Soviet Union is gone, while Christmas still stands. Now
it’s Venezuela’s turn. That country, spiraling into chaos and hyperinflation in
the wake of socialism’s failure, is desperately trying to co-opt Christmas. “Venezuela’s
socialist government has seized nearly 4 million toys from a private company
and says it intends to hand them out as Christmas gifts to poor children this
