The question never varied during my last
four years in Venezuela. It could pop up when I was waiting in a long line for
the chance to buy bread or toilet paper, or while being interviewed by
immigration officials when I renewed by residency permit. Policemen always
asked me when they did traffic checks, as did the woman at my post office. "You
can leave this disaster; why don't you?" Depending on the questioner, I
might laugh or smile before launching into my reasons for staying in Venezuela.
