The Guyanese government on Wednesday announced that it has
given U.S.-based oil company ExxonMobil the assurance that it has nothing to
fear regarding its current oil exploration efforts in the country's territorial
waters despite diplomatic tensions with Venezuela. Guyanese President David
Granger said in a statement that he met with officials from the firm and
assured them that ExxonMobil should have no concerns about its present
operations in Guyana's waters. In the interim, Granger said the Caribbean
Community, the Organization of American States and the Union of South American
Nations have been notified of Venezuela's recent maritime territorial claim.
