For the first time in the history of the
United Nations, three countries teamed up to host a dinner reception on the eve
of the voting for non-permanent seats of the Security Council. This was the
final lobbying effort by the three countries, which are also candidates of
their respective continents, before the voting on Thursday.Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman,
in a press conference after the events said the reception displayed the
dedication of three countries sharing a similar objective. He said the cross-region effort was a
beginning of a closer cooperation among the three countries, which are also
members of the Non-Aligned Movement, vying for a seat in the Security Council. “Based
on the excellent record of Malaysia on several issues under the UN sponsorship,
we are confident that Malaysia can contribute significantly with the
cooperation of Angola and Venezuela, as well as other members of the Security
Council,” he said.
