Most of the striking workers come from
the mining company Corporacion Venezolana de Guayana, known as CVG and its
steelmaker subsidiary Sidor. At the start of the Bolivarian revolution,
Venezuela had the fourth largest steel industry in Latin America but in recent
years, profits and productivity have been seemingly dropping. Some workers
believe the government's political influence has negatively affected on
workers’ performance. In this context, the opposition also blames the
government for the decline in the industry which, they say, have caused
electricity cuts and the scarcity of steel products for housing and auto
industry. But on the revolutionary side, many say the opposition is the force
behind the job action that’s aimed to destabilize the government of President
