A gorgeous and brilliant mix of contemporary jazz and deep folkloric influences, pianist Edward Simon’sVenezuelan Suite is the first disc to dazzle me in 2014. I expected music of that calibre from the Venezuela-born, central Florida-based Simon, 44, given his exceptional trio discs over the years and his collaborations alto saxophonist David Binney, and that’s not to mention his earlier, powerful work as a sideman with trumpeter Terence Blanchard and alto saxophonist Bobby Watson.
